Castanea sativa - Native to S. Europe & Asia Minor, introduced to the UK by the Romans. It is a fast-growing, long-lived, deciduous tree, typically reaching between 20 & 30 metres in height, making a handsome specimen. In late June-July it produces catkins up to 20cm in length. When Autumn comes the female flowers develop into chestnuts, dropping to the ground as they ripen. The leaves turn a glorious yellow before falling. Suited to most conditions. Moderately lime tolerant. Priced for: a grafted 'whip' 80 - 100 cm tall
